How many ambulances does the HFPD have?

The HFPD has 3 Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances.  The ambulance is staffed 24hrs a day with one Paramedic and one EMT.

What EMS system does the HFPD belong to?

HFPD is part of the Rock River Region EMS system that affiliated with Rockford Memorial Hospital.  The EMS program at RMH is headed by Dr. Dennis Uehara.  RMH is a Level 1 Trauma hospital and a teaching hospital.  This has proven to be a good combination for providing resources to the district.

What specialty teams does the district have?

HFPD has a SCUBA dive team that is part of the McHenry County MABAS 5 Dive Team.  Given the amount of water in ponds, small lakes and streams within the district, the district felt it was import to provide this vital service to the community.  We also have a Technical Rescue Team with MABAS Division 5 that is responsible for any rescue involving high angle or confined spaces.  We are also equipped to handle and set up a decontamination site in case of a hazardous material spill.  Should the HFPD need more help in a hazardous materials situation we have the ability to contact Lake/Mchenry County Haz-Mat response team and get additional manpower and equipment in case of a large chemical, radiological, biological contamination.

Where does the HFPD get its training?

The district's desire to provide highly qualified Emergency Medical System (EMS) and Fire professionals is exemplified by its on-going commitment to continuing education.  Training sessions are held two times a month at the fire station.  Employees are also offered training opportunities from outside the fire district.  HFPD also holds certification courses at its facilities.

Members of the department have also attended courses through Rockford Memorial Hospital such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), EMT-Paramedic program and others.  These courses range  from a one day seminar to full semester classes.

What is a controlled burn?

A controlled burn is a training exercise where a building, a vehicle or another item is burned.  These burns can take hours, days, and weeks of planning to ensure they can be controlled, to organize the way they burn, and to ensure that training goals are met.
